DO YOU OWE CHILD SUPPORT?
Owing child support arrearages is a serious matter. Parents that fail to provide court ordered child support may face contempt, punishable by 6 months confinement in the county jail, a $500 fine, or both. Considering the possible effects of nonpayment, it is imperative that individuals who owe support seek legal assistance before being faced with an enforcement action. There are available options to help get your child support payments back on track and save you and your child from further emotional and financial hardship.
DO YOU THINK YOUR CHILD SUPPORT AMOUNT IS INCORRECT?
The Texas Legislature has devised guidelines to determine the proper amount of child support. The court considers these guidelines as well as the needs of the child, the ability of parents to contribute to the child's support, and any financial resources available for the support of the child, and the amount of possession and access to the child.
The court may modify a support order if there is a material and substantial change of the affected party or the child, or if there is a deviation from the guideline. If there is a deviation from the guideline, there must have been 3 years since the order was entered or last modified, or the amount of support differs from the guidelines by either 20% or $100.
